Where’s the Fault?

As a PUMA (PAS128 utility mapping accreditation) endorsed Utility Mapping company, LandScope is keen to ensure that its employees operate to the highest standards and make use of the latest technology.

Electromagnetic Location (EML) is a key survey skill and as part of our regular ongoing training, we held an advanced EML course at a typical sewage treatment site (previously surveyed by LandScope). This provided the perfect environment to test our approach to survey and be vetted by an independent third party.

Training included a comprehensive review of our standard survey approach including site inspection, frequency choice and methods for reliable detection of individual cables in a band. Junior members of the team were also shown specific techniques used to detect the trickier types of utility, such as large, earthed pipes and pot-ended/terminating cables.

Further training was undertaken in the use of an “A-frame” for cable fault finding. This resulted in a formerly unknown fault being located during detection!

Employees gained surety in their skills and a range of new tools with which to tackle complicated underground systems.
